Devin Kelley, the man who killed at least 26 people in the Sutherland Springs church shooting on Sunday morning, was briefly employed as a security guard at New Braunfels' Schlitterbahn waterpark in June.
According to a Schlitterbahn press statement, Kelley was employed 5 1/2 weeks over the past summer as an unarmed night security guard. He was fired for unknown reasons in July.
"We, like the rest of our community, were horrified to learn of the tragedy in Sutherland Springs at the First Baptist Church," the statement from the waterpark reads. "We are keeping everyone impacted by this malicious act in our thoughts and our prayers."
In a Monday press conference, Department of Public Safety spokesman Freeman Martin said that Kelley did not have a license to carry a gun in Texas — but he did have a state unarmed security guard license, which requires a background check. Schlitterbahn confirmed that Kelley had passed a criminal background check through DPS.
