Suzanna Choffel CD Release

Critic's Pick Release Date: 2011-05-19

Choffel, a guitar-wielding Austin-based indie soul-pop songstress who sings like a smoking angel, is releasing new album Steady Eye Shaky Bow with a band every bit as good as she is: Johnny Vogelsang (bass), Laura Scarborough (vibraphone, accordion, synthesizer), and Kyle Thompson (drums). If you still haven’t caught her video “Raincloud” on YouTube, click over to discover an artist who is beyond categorization. Her stuff is jazzy, rootsy, mellow, or hard, depending on the song’s needs, but it is her voice and stage presence that set her apart. More than a great singer-songwriter (she won the John Lennon Songwriting Contest in 2008, and was chosen Indie Artist of the Year at the Austin Music Awards in 2009), Choffel is a true frontwoman. Steady Eye is even better than her acclaimed debut, 2008’s Shudders & Rings, making this show is a must-see. The new album comes out May 24, but if you can’t wait, you can hear it on SoundCloud. Go now. You’ll thank me. $8, 9pm, Luna, 6740 San Pedro, (210) 804-2433, lunalive.com.
