Whoo-hoo! A new Rapture record! Er, not exactly. Brooklyn’s revered indie-dance act the Rapture releases Tapes, a patchwork DJ mix of some of its favorite acts, old and new. At first glance, the disc is either a disappointing stop-gap between albums or a Christmas cash-grab no better than the millionth repackaging of Barbara Streisand’s greatest hits. Don’t be fooled.
The Rapture is a great live act that would rather get down than gaze at its collective shoes, and Tapes delivers that upbeat mentality while tapping into the band’s New York influences. There’s sweet ’70s funk (the Bar-Kays and Vaughan Mason), electro-house from the late-’90s onward (Armand Van Helden, Daft Punk’s Thomas Bangalter), even some East Coast hip-hop (Ghostface Killah). While the Rapture might be taking its time with original material, Tapes is a fun way for fans to better know the band, a moderately successful appendix to a group firmly entrenched under the disco ball.
