After taking gold in Italy this week, a San Antonio-area mother has become the most-decorated Black athlete in Winter Olympic history.

Elana Meyers Taylor, 41, won her first gold medal on Monday in the women’s monobob, beating Laura Nolte of Germany by just four-hundredths of a second. It’s the fourth medal the New Braunfels resident has won during her 16-year career in the sport, which is the individual version of bobsledding.

“It’s going to take a while for this to sink in,” Meyers Taylor told reporters following her win. “I still can’t believe it.”

Meyers Taylor transitioned to bobsledding in 2007 after a successful collegiate softball career. She then moved into the monobob, where she began racking up medals and appeared in five Winter Olympic Games.

The USA team now has nine gold medals, 12 silver medals and six bronze medals at this year’s Winter Olympics.

The 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina will wrap up with a closing ceremony on Sunday.
