The Cliks, Killola, Hunter Valentine

Critic's Pick Release Date: 2010-07-28

TV-heads might recognize Lisa Rieffel from the first five seasons of The King of Queens or maybe the lesbian-themed web series Girltrash! (Rieffel also stars in Girl Trash: All Night Long, a feature film set for a 2011 release), but music fans (especially of the online variety) know the actress-singer as the fearless leader of Killola, an L.A.-based garage-pop-punk band with a knack for cost-effective self-promotion. Thanks to friends in the right places, the recording of Louder, Louder! — Killola’s 2006 debut — cost the band “close to zero.” A hefty internet presence earned Killola an impressive following in the UK, where they recorded Live in England as the culmination of a 2007 tour. 2008’s I Am The Messer was “freeleased” as a downloadable album, but hardcore fans sprung for fashionable “Digital Arms bRACElets” (USB flash-drive bracelets with hidden tracks, videos, and photos), which should look great next to this year’s model: 2010’s Let’s Get Associated is basically the band’s entire back catalog — seven years of DIY music and style on an official Killola USB Dog Tag. Also on the bill: the Cliks (fronted by “transman” Lucas Silveira) and Hunter Valentine (an all-girl alternative rock band), both of which are based in Toronto.
