Illegal fishing by Mexican nationals who cross into U.S. waters near South Padre Island is a problem that doesn't go away and it just keeps growing.

This week, the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Corpus Christi spotted three vessels fishing illegally north of the border and approached, prompting the fishermen to flee, leaving behind gear, including a gill net.

Gill nets can be huge, and in this one, the Coast Guard rescued 50 living sharks and two tripletail fish. Authorities also found five dead sharks.

That same day, another gill net containing more than 70 dead sharks and other sea life washed up on South Padre Island, KRGV-TV reported
