President Donald Trump has nominated Republican Ryan Patrick, a former Harris County judge, to be the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Texas. Patrick is the son of Texas right-wing radio host turned Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick.
The White House announced this decision on Wednesday, October 31. If selected, Patrick would fill the spot left by U.S. Attorney Ken Magidson, one of the 45 Obama-appointed U.S. attorneys asked to resign by the Trump Administration in March.
Texas' Southern District represents 43 counties and the Houston, Galveston, Corpus Christi, Laredo, and Brownsville metro regions. Each U.S. District Court is led by a single White House-appointed attorney. The Western District, which covers San Antonio federal cases, is currently led by U.S. Attorney Richard Durbin — but the Senate is nearing a vote to approve Trump's September 8 nomination of John F. Bash to the seat.
Patrick was appointed to Harris County's 177th state district by then-Governor Rick Perry in 2012, but lost the seat in the 2016 election. He must be confirmed by the U.S. Senate before officially claiming the seat.
