Two San Antonio-area school districts will receive monitoring visits from federal officials this week to see how well they're educating students with disabilities, according to a Texas Tribune report.
Comal ISD, which includes New Braunfels, and Spring Branch ISD in the Canyon Lake area are among six Texas districts receiving oversight visits. The others are Houston ISD, Laredo ISD, Everman ISD and Lubbock ISD.
The U.S. Department of Education is scrutinizing Texas districts after a 2018 probe determined that the state violated the law by cutting year-to-year funding for special education programs. Texas effectively capped the percentage of students who could receive special education services, depriving them of their needs, federal authorities charge.
Texas officials last year found that all six school districts scheduled for the federal visits — Comal being the sole exception — needed intervention or help to fix their programs, the Tribune reports, citing state records.
According to a separate Tribune story, Texas officials recently estimated that the state could owe as much as $223 million in penalties for illegally slashing its funding for students with disabilities.
