Upon a Burning Body w/ American me, & Molotov Solution,

Critic's Pick Release Date: 2009-11-11

They’re responsible for some of the hardest music exported from San Antonio, but I’ll always have a soft spot for Upon a Burning Body. This noisy-as-hell metal-hardcore outfit played the first show I ever reviewed for the Current, and though my wife left halfway through, bleeding (ironically, she scraped her arm on the wall trying to stay clear of all the mosh-pit insanity in White Rabbit’s back room), it’s hard not to get sentimental about my first flash that— beyond all the sweaty teenagers pounding the angst out of one another — there is some pretty badass music being made, even if it’s wrapped in a loud and angry package. You can say the same for a lot of San Antonio bands, but more than a year later, I’m still convinced UABB is one of the best. New tracks like “Wickersham” and “Misery Loves Company” finds the band more confident in its many, many timing changeups, allowing for a fearsome sound that feels less like racing a flaming motorcycle on the edge of an abyss than being run over by a seven-story bulldozer. The band’s too big to keep to ourselves these days, and White Rabbit’s a single stop on a national tour, but this show promises to be a real event. Crowd up to the front and stick your elbows out: Don’t be shy. As my wife discovered last summer, if you want to hear good music in San Antonio, sometimes you’ve gotta bleed for it. $12, 7 p.m. Fri, Nov 13, White Rabbit, 2410 N. St. Mary’s sawhiterabbit.com. — Jeremy Martin
