Stay Current with the Pick of the Day: JD Samson

Posted By on Wed, Mar 27, 2013 at 12:04 PM

A former projectionist who joined the feminist electroclash trio Le Tigre in 2000, JD Samson (born Jocelyn Samson in Cleveland) is co-founder of the performance art group Dykes Can Dance and a founding member of the Brooklyn-based music/art/performance collective MEN. Out since age 15, Samson’s uncompromising style has made her an icon of the underground LGBT scene, justified by lesbian calendars and an appearance in John Cameron Mitchell’s sexually explicit film Shortbus. In a 2005 article in The New York Times titled “These Kittens Have Whiskers,” singer-songwriter and performance artist Peaches cited Samson as a “good example” of a woman who’s embraced her natural facial hair. Samson — who considers the fuzz across her upper lip “armor” and has the word “mustache” tattooed across her chest — lands at the Brass Monkey for an exclusive DJ set with support from DJ Glitoris, creator of Austin’s “electro/homo/indie” party TuezGayz. Free, 9pm-2am Wednesday, Brass Monkey, 2702 N St. Mary’s, (210) 584-0103. Check out our full online calendar of upcoming events here:
