Bosnian Rainbows is Omar Rodriguez-Lopez’s new band.  It’s not the Omar Rodriguez-Lopez Group and it’s not the Mars Volta, even though it features the same drummer Deantoni Parks.  Leave any preconceptions you might have behind.  There are no long instrumental jams.  But there is Teri Gender-Bender and some of the best songs you’ve ever heard.  Teri of Le Butcherettes, puts aside her punk sneers and showcases one of the greatest female voices I’ve heard in a long time.  Her stage presence is captivating.  Think of a mix between Ian Curtis of Joy Division and the character of Emily in The Exorcism of Emily Rose.  Austin, TX witnessed a performance with quick jerky motions, banging her head against the mic stand and pantomimg scenes that looked emotionally confusing.  I began to wonder if it’s not just an act, but her way of expressing what she’s lyrically trying to tell us.  When the chorus of show closer, “Mother, Father, Set us Free” hits and she stands in place signing “I chose to ignore it/Thinking I was better off dead”, the look on her face told me she meant every word. When the music stopped, she smiled thankfully at everyone and thanked the audience in Spanish with the biggest look of gratitude.

The rest of the band stayed pretty much confined to their spot making sure every note was spot on.  Omar hit so many pedals that it looked like a dance the whole time moving from his guitar to synth and even signing along with Teri on certain songs.   The drummer, Deantoni Parks had only a snare, bass drum and hi-hat, yet had the biggest drum sound I’ve heard in a long time. And he did this also while playing keys. There’s no bass player, but we have Nicci Kasper who takes care of that along with playing keys .   Their new album drops at the end of June and I highly suggest you get it.  Before you know it, everyone else will be talking about them.
