Latin America is one of the world’s great breeding grounds for metal, and while De La Tierra isn’t the first Spanish-speaking extreme supergroup (that title likely belongs to Brujería), they’re still out to stake a claim in that relatively unexplored territory. With their first single, "Maldita historia" (the full album comes out in November via Warner), Andrés Giménez (singer/ guitarist for Argentina's A.N.I.M.A.L.), Alex González (drummer for Mexico's Maná), Sr. Flavio (bassist for Argentina's Los Fabulosos Cadillacs) and Andreas Kisser (guitarist of Brazil's Sepultura), the band eschews the current Latino vogue for thrash revivalism and puts out a surprisingly heavy throwback sound that owes a lot to the hardest stuff of the early '80s, but with a modern flair. Worth a listen even if you don’t habla metal.
