Art of War

Datpiff.com is awesome and free, but their most-listened-to mixtapes currently include five from Lil Wayne and three from Wiz Khalifa, so those seeking the newest thing in hip-hop might be better off going outside. Art of War challenges MCs and beat-makers to deliver the goods live in original-track battles. Not all will be good, but some will be great, and you probably never would’ve thought to Google any of them. That goes triple for break dancing and graffiti, well represented here but mostly discovered online via YouTube roulette. With DJ Prophetski, DJ Tums, DJ GI Joe, Rebel Planet. $8-$12, 8pm-2am Fri, 3pm-2am Sat, 8pm-2am Sun, Limelight, 2718 N St. Mary's, (210) 737-2221, thelimelightsa.com Jeremy Martin

Hikes, Crown, Collective Dreams

Austin post-rockers Hikes dip into some wild finger tapping and tasteful arrangements on their recent self-titled LP. On their debut release Are These the Good Days?, SA trio Crown hit the studio with Austin producer Nick Joswick, short on time, but with clear intentions for the final product. With that creative (and financial) motivation in place, Crown’s debut is a scorcher of an LP, nine tracks of blues, psychedelic and surf rock. SA’s Collective Dreams follows in the wake of fellow Texans and instrumental atmospherists Explosions in the Sky.  Free, 10:30pm, Bottom Bracket Social Club, 1603 N Colorado, (210) 267-9160,  facebook.com/bottombracketsocialclub  —Matt Stieb

Labor Fest

Don’t get it “Twisted,” there’s “Nobody” who gives you “Funky Dope Lovin'” like Keith Sweat. At 53, the 1990's R&B hit-maker and New Jack Swing innovator released the surprisingly fresh ’Til the Morning (which reached No. 38 on the Billboard 200) in 2011, proving that he’s still got it. For further proof of the man’s undying smooth, you can catch him in action this weekend, along with fellow funk/soul/R&B acts Rose Royce, Ohio Players, Dazz Band, Midnight Star and others, as a part of the two-day Labor Fest. Our advice: grab your sweetie (or someone’s) and get set to get down. $15-$450, 4pm-11pm Sat, 4pm-11pm Sun, Sunken Garden Theater, 3875 N. St. Mary's St., (210) 735-0663, laborfestsa.com James Courtney

Becky G

As Austin Mahone did to Justin Bieber, budding singer-rapper Becky G was discovered after she uploaded Selena Gomez remixes on YouTube. Gaining traction on her own merit, the 17-year-0ld singer has since collaborated with A-lister Pitbull and hearthrob Cody Simpson, even earning the respect of Simon Cowell and the Biebs' himself. In her breakthrough summertime hit single "Shower," Becky G's squeaky-clean raps and catchy vocals bring to mind the innocence of a youthful crush in the heat of July. Theatrical strings set the mood for her ode to a "homie, lover and friend," and when the candy-coated sing-along chorus kicks in, "Shower" hits the sweet spot. The California native headlines the concert portion of the Festival People en Español. $20-$60, 7pm, Lila Cockrell Theatre, 200 E Market, (210) 207-8500, peopleenespanol.com/festival —Shannon Sweet

SA's Garrett T. Capps: the only hipster

On "San Antone," Garrett T. Capps knocks out a lovely list of SA music icons: "Sir Doug, Flaco and the Sun-Glos / Butthole Surfers and Bongo Joe / Ozzy Pissin' on the Alamo / Pistols at Randy's Rodeo, Godfather on the Radio / Gunther hotel Robert Jo."  8pm, The Mix, 2423 N St Marys, (210) 788-7555, themixtacoma.com —Matt Stieb
