Scott Weiland, the wild, wily frontman of Stone Temple Pilots, Velvet Revolver and most recently the Wildabouts, has died. Weiland was on his tour bus in Bloomington, Indiana when he was discovered dead and is said to have passed away in his sleep, as announced on Instagram.

Most well known as the provocative singer with the snake charmer swank in '90s rock 'n' roll band Stone Temple Pilots, Weiland, who kept the Cobain mojo rolling through the '90s after the Nirvana frontman's passing, went on to form a "supergroup" with Dave Kushner and former Guns N' Roses members Slash, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum, Velvet Revolver, in 2001. Weiland had a long history with substance abuse and was in and out of rehabilitation clinics for much of his adult life.

Stone Temple Pilots' mainstream breakthrough came on the heels of their '92 release Core, which went platinum eight times through the strength of Weiland's moody songwriting and rich, somber baritone and exemplary singles "Plush," "Wicked Garden," "Dead & Bloated," "Creep" and "Sex Type Thing."  They followed up Core with the six-time platinum certified Purple, which included "Big Empty," "Vasoline," "Unglued" and "Interstate Love Song."

Weiland stated to Rolling Stone in 2008, in regards to his ambition for Stone Temple Pilots, "Ultimately, our goal was to create a legacy. When we were in the car driving around together, promoting local gigs, it was, 'One day we will be one of those bands that have a creative legacy.'"
