Casa de Calacas, J.R. Scott & The Unlucky Strikes
Friday, September 23

Leave it to East Los Angeles to assemble a Latin ensemble that’s ska, cumbia, reggae and mariachi. In fact, they’re proud of the fact: songs like “East Los” highlight the grupo’s hometown with hooks like “Where you from, where we from? East Los!” when they’re not name-dropping East Los streets with pride. Some songs start with a slow mariachi sound and abruptly cut to a ska-punk breakdown, before moving back to swaying mariachi. Horns are a staple here. Other times, they’re jamming cumbias about güeritas. Be it pure mariachi, ska or rap about their hometown, Casa de Calacas plays to get down and expand the cultura of Latin music. Joining the bill is J.R. Scott & The Unlucky Strikes, local alt-country ensemble. 9pm, $3, La Botanica 2726 N St. Mary's
