It’s not exactly every day that folks from San Antonio sign on to huge record labels. Especially in this new era of DIY resurgence, with the entire music industry changing over the past two decades, landing major label support is a rare occasion.

But that’s exactly what's happened for bassist Troy Doebbler and guitarist Roman Surman of the band Wednesday 13, which signed with the juggernaut metal label Nuclear Blast earlier this year whose roster includes bands like Dimmu Borgir, Meshuggah and Cradle of Filth.

Surman told the Current that he and Wednesday 13, AKA Joseph Poole, met when Poole and he were on tour back in the summer of 2006. Poole was playing in Ministry back then and Surman was managing tour dates for SA industrial band Pitbull Daycare. “We’re both fools and have a stupid sense of humor,” Surman said, explaining the two became instant friends. After Surman acted as Poole’s guitar tech and stage manager for a while, he eventually became guitarist for Poole’s band, Wednesday 13.

And over the last decade, Wednesday 13 have continued to make the Hot Topic crowd swoon (they even released an album exclusively through the store), putting out horror punk records reminiscent of more theatrical acts like Misfits or White Zombie. On their newest record, Condolences, which was produced by Rob Zombie and Hatebreed producer Chris “Zeuss” Harris, the band moved towards a more hard metal edge.

In support of the new album, which was released earlier this month, the band is on a summer tour across the U.S. and are making a stop at Paper Tiger on Saturday, July 1 to remind us that sometimes the best way to stay cool during the summer is... to die.

OK, so maybe not die, but to at least look dead.

With Once Human, Gabriel And The Apocalypse, $15, 7pm, Paper Tiger, 2410 N. St. Mary's St., papertigersatx.com
