Do We Really Need This H-E-B Bag With Selena's Face On It?

OK, this might be heresy, but look.

We get it. We love Selena. Like, who in their sound mind doesn’t? She represents so much about Latin and Tex-Mex culture. She could sing, and she was beautiful, and kind, and apparently (from the movie) could eat a whole medium pizza on her own. This list could go on.

But do we need her face on yet another thing?

Starting Friday, H-E-B will be selling limited edition reusable bags with images of the pop star and the title “Queen of Cumbia” in bold, pink letters for $2 at select H-E-B stores across Texas and online at HEB.com.

As part of this collab, H-E-B will donate $25,000 to The Selena Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to communal and educational initiatives. The Selena Foundation will dedicate funds from this donation to the Boys & Girls Club of the Coastal Bend.

So, some of this money is going to a good cause and the bags are made out of 100% recycled material – that’s great, but:

When does Selena get to just be a memory and not a product to be purchased to fill our consumerist hearts?

Can we honor her life by playing her records and dancing to her music when a DJ spins one of her tracks at La Botanica, or do we need a bag with her face on it to really feel connected to her?

*blasts "Amor Prohibido" in the office and ugly-cries.*
