Open-eared headbangers, mark your calendars. A four-pronged tour uniting some of Europe's most creative metal acts has confirmed a San Antonio date.

Headliner Amorphis, hailing from Finland, started as a death metal outfit but veered into more eclectic territory, layering its sound with psychedelia, prog and folk. Finnish mythology — including the Kalevala, the nation's epic poem — play heavily in its lyrics.

Long-running Swedish band Dark Tranquility helped pioneer a more melodic approach to death metal that borrows the accessible riffs and twin-lead guitar lines from older, stadium-filling acts like Maiden and Priest.

Moonspell, from Portugal, meld metal's dark lyrical bent with a dose of the Sisters of Mercy-style goth rock, while Omnium Gatherum, also from Finland, mixes death metal with complex harmonies and melodies.

Tue Oct 2, 8pm, The Rock Box, 1223 E. Houston St., (210) 677-9453, therockboxsa.com.
