A Canadian cultural icon, Gordon Lightfoot has been steadily putting out thoughtful and often gorgeous folk music since his debut in 1966, having influenced generations of American and Canadian folksters along the way. His songs convey timeless fears and joys, broach deep philosophical questions, and translate the particular to the universal, all while maintaining quite an impressive economy of words and never succumbing to fad. His storytelling via song is unrivaled.

Lightfoot, a consummate showman of the old folk tradition whose world-weary baritone has held up remarkably well, is an artist to know if you are interested in pure songwriting or the evolution of folk into the folk-pop and folk-rock subgenres. His songs are so good that they’ve been covered by artists as important and diverse as Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Olivia Newton-John, Elvis Presley, and the Replacements. This tour, “Gordon Lightfoot In Concert: The Legend Lives On,” promises to find the iconic artist splitting the difference between his hits and the deep cuts that longtime fans favor.

$34.50-$79.50, Mon May 7, 8pm, Tobin Center for the Performing Arts, 100 Auditorium Circle, tobincenter.org.
