Before Cardi B. was making “money moves” recording both English and Spanish-language tracks, Ivy Queen’s brazen musical performances were shifting attitudes concerning gender and race. You could say the Puerto Rican hip-hop and reggaetón star was ahead of her time when her 1997 major-label debut En Mi Imperio struggled to find commercial success in the U.S.

But two decades into the game, Ivy Queen has become one of the only successful female artists in reggaetón, a genre dominated by men and known for its objectification of women. A pioneer of urban Latin music, Ivy Queen melds various influences from salsa to bachata to create a unique musical style that lends itself to themes of female empowerment and cultural pride. On Sunday, the Aztec Theatre welcomes the reggaetón disruptor with support from salsa singer Jerry Rivera.

$45-$76.65, Sun May 27, 8pm, Aztec Theatre, 104 N. St. Mary’s St., (210) 812-4355, theaztectheatre.com.
