The Queen of Soul has died.

Aretha Franklin passed away Thursday in her home city of Detroit after a battle with pancreatic cancer, according to NPR and Gwendolyn Quinn, Franklin’s publicist. Franklin was 76.

The singer, performer and musical icon sold more than 75 million records throughout her decade-spanning career, inspiring multiple generations of artists and performers and making her one of the best-selling artists of all-time.

Born March 25, 1942 in Memphis, Tennessee, Franklin was raised in Detroit by her family including her father, the Rev. C.L. Franklin, who was a famous preacher at that time. According to NPR, Franklin’s family was close friends with the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., who often stayed at their home, which contributed to her childhood being filled with mix of music and civil rights.

Celebrities, entertainers and even politicians took to social media to express their condolences:
It’s safe to say that today, we didn’t just lose a legend in music; today departed an important icon, whose contributions to rock ‘n’ roll, soul and the overall fabric of American art and culture will continue to ripple out, influence and inspire infinite generations.
