"We looked like giants / in the back of my grey sub compact / fumbling to make compact as the others slept inside/"

Oh early 2000s indie rock, how we still have a special place in our heart for you. And to be honest, I'm kind of having a meta moment thinking about 20 years ago, hanging with my friends, when the above lyrics from "We Looked like Giants" was about reminiscing about times past.

Weeeeeeiiiiiiiird.

If you spent any time feeling sad and listening to indie music in the last twenty years, chances are you've come across a Death Cab For Cutie song or two. Formed in 1997 and releasing albums like the magical Transatlanticism, the band have become iconic for their emotive indie songs that wrapped themselves up in enough pop sensibility to be digestible for the masses.

Released this past August, their ninth endeavor Thank You for Today shows a newer side to the band but definitely retains their distinct identity.

“I realized early on in the process that I wanted to write a record that is very much who we are,” said singer and guitarist Ben Gibbard in a press release. “I wanted to go more inward, and create something more personal.” On songs such as the kinetic “Gold Rush,” “Northern Lights” and “You Moved Away,” Gibbard ruminates on the flux going on in his hometown, and weaves a thread throughout the album about how interconnected geography is with memory, and how hard it can be to hold onto places and to people, too.

The band is headed to the Aztec Theatre on Tuesday, April 2, 2019 in support of Thank You for Today, and if we're here for it.

Tickets go on sale Friday, December 7 at 10 a.m. Live Nation pre-sale is Thursday, December 6 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Password: CHILL
