L.A.’s Sprain heads up this swell experimental rock bill that will kickstart your New Year off with a dose of patient sadness imbued with heavy metal moods. The band, more versatile than most would-be hard rock outfits, makes music that runs from slow sadcore stylings to the raging tumult of hardcore-yet-melodic noise. All of it is thoughtful and dynamic, and the layers of surprising instruments and touches of grace let you know Sprain is onto something unique.

Ants and Filthy, two of S.A.’s finest experimental, rock-based bands, will provide support and peddle their own sonic wares, which range from unhinged shoegaze explorations to tightly executed post-punk, respectively. A night sure to appeal to those who fancy themselves fans of creative adaptations of hard rock stylings.

$3, Thu Jan. 3, 9pm, Hi-Tones, 621 E. Dewey Pl., (210) 785-8777, hitonessa.com.
