Renowned Tejana legend Rita Vidaurri, who was known for songs like “San Antonio Hermoso,” “Por Que Señor,” “Sacrificio” and “La Esposa Del Caminante,” has died at 94.

A post from the Esperanza Peace & Justice Center states that Vidaurri passed away Wednesday evening. She was reportedly surrounded by people who loved her.

Born on the West Side of San Antonio in 1924, Vidaurri gained regional fame in the ’40s and ’50s with her contributions to the ranchera genre. She was the first Tejana to sing at Madison Square Garden.

Vidaurri’s last public performance was just last year on November 1, 2018 at the Esperanza Peace & Justice Center, singing alongside Blanca Rodriguez and Beatriz Llamas in a supergroup called Las Tesoros de San Antonio. The evening celebrated pioneering Tejana women such as Lydia Mendoza and Eva Garza while also honoring each other’s respective “lifelong personal and professional struggles against racism, sexism, homophobia and poverty.”

The Current will post updates on services and more information as it becomes available.
