Arguably one of the most brutal metal lineups hitting to San Antonio in recent memory, the Chaos and Carnage Tour brings together Whitechapel, Dying Fetus and a spate of other bands pushing metal to sonic extremes.

Headliner Whitechapel has introduced more of an active-rock edge to its sound but still retains the heaviness of its early deathcore work. Fans who haven’t heard the new music may be afraid that the band’s lost some of its brutality, but the more accessible vocals and chord progressions add a sense of depth and maturity.

Dying Fetus, around since 1991, mashes elements of nu-metal, grindcore, tech-metal shredding and complex compositions into a mind-bending combination.

$26-$30, Thu May 9, 4:30-11:45, Rock Box,1223 E. Houston St., (210) 677-9453, therockboxsa.com.
