10 Free Events Happening in San Antonio This Week

1. Sea of Monsters Movie Launch Party- Tuesday, August 6

Join Barnes & Noble for a special early premiere of the newest Percy Jackson movie, Sea of Monsters. The adventures continue for Percy Jackson and his friends, as they search for the Golden Fleece. Dress in your demigod best and enjoy games, quests, trivia and more before the premiere at 7 p.m.

2. Blue Hawaii Luau Party- Tuesday, August 6

Grab your best Hawaiian shirt and head down to La Villita for the Elvis classic Blue Hawaii. The film stars the King as a returning GI who defies his mother by taking a job as a tour guide instead of working for his pineapple tycoon father (Gasp!). Enjoy the Grammy-nominated music and '60s drama at La Villita. Show starts at 8:30 p.m.

3. Beer Tasting at the Hangar- Wednesday, August 7

Free beer! Need I say more? If that didn’t catch your attention here’s some more information. The Hangar Tavern will be starting a new tradition of free beer tasting every 1st Wednesday of the month starting Aug. 7 from 7-9 p.m. This week’s brewers include Dogfish Head Brewery, Pedernales, Southern Star, Real Ale Brewing Co., and Anchor Steam.

4. Ghostbusters at Wonderland of the Americas- Thursday, August 8

Join Wonderland of the Americas as they venture back to the eighties with a free showing of Ghostbusters. As part of their Free Movie Nights, Wonderland of the Americas will host a free movie every Thursday in August. This week, the first 200 guests can enjoy Ghostbusters at the Santikos Bijou starting at 7 p.m. So, who ya gonna call?

5. McNay Second Thursdays- Thursday, August 8

Spend this Thursday night at the McNay with a night of art, music, food, and drinks. The summer series kicks off by celebrating "Norman Rockwell: Behind the Camera." Of course the night would not be complete without complimentary beer courtesy of Third Shift Amber Lager and a free concert by Ken Little and Rodeo Ho Ho! Drop what you’re doing this Thursday and hit up the McNay from 6-9 p.m.

6. Scavenger Hunt Thursday- Thursday, August 8

Interested in a little bar fun? This Thursday at the Hangar Tavern empty your pockets and purses for a little scavenger hunt Hangar style. Guests must hunt for items at the jockey’s request using only items from their pockets, purses, and around the bar. The game starts at 9 p.m. and is free to play. You’ve got nothing to lose!

7. Radius Gallery Art Opening & Reception- Friday, August 9

The Radius Center is hosting an art opening for artist Chris Rutz. Rutz’s art is done in a realistic manner and focuses on people and the simple still life beauty around him. Enjoy his paintings and complimentary wine Friday from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

8. Back to School Bash- Saturday, August 10

Take a break from back to school shopping and take the little ones to the Back to School Bash at the San Antonio Children’s Museum. Children and adults will receive free admission from 9 to noon to explore the museum’s exhibits, participate in educational activities, and receive free goodies. Don’t forget your camera for the special appearances by Buddy from Dinosaur Train, a PBS program for children.

9. 10th Annual Last Hurrah Summer Concert- Saturday, August 10

Join the Twig Book Shop and Mr. Julian, a favorite San Antonio children’s entertainer, for the last days of summer on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. Mr. Julian plays guitar, sings, and shares his musical instruments for everyone to play along, what more could any young twiglet want? All ages are invited to participate, so grab the kids, the grandkids and family friends for the one-of-a-kind concert.

10. Bret Graham at Gruene Hall- Sunday, August 11

When was the last time you took a peaceful day trip getaway to New Braunfels to enjoy some good ole’ country music at Gruene Hall? If you can’t answer that, then it’s been too damn long. This Sunday Gruene Hall is hosting an early afternoon country performance by Bret Graham. This Oklahoma native is bringing country music back to the south for Sunday’s performance at 12:30 p.m. You best not wanna miss this one!
