Día de los Muertos
With its oddly reverent and satirical blend of Catholic concepts and Aztec rituals, Día de los Muertos gives Halloween a run for its money in bicultural San Antonio, where events celebrating the dearly departed run the gamut from traditional observances to fusion-minded fiestas. Standing out among the cream of this crop are community gathering at the Esperanza Peace and Justice Center, which honors lost loved ones with calavera face painting, a dance procession led by URBAN-15, street theater performances and live music by Bene Medina y Su Conjunto Aguila, Los de Esta Noche, Las Tesoros de San Antonio and Mariachi Durango (free, 3-9pm Sat, Rinconcito de Esperanza, 816 S Colorado); and the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center, where a dance performance incorporating stilts, a literary workshop courtesy of Gemini Ink and an exhibit of altars come together in a “beautiful display of folklore and spirituality” (free, 5-8pm Sun, Museo Guadalupe, 723 S Brazos).
