“What It Means”

  • Rafael F. Gutierrez Jr., Blind March

While Contemporary Art Month’s latest CAMx exhibition establishes a cross-cultural collaboration between San Antonio and Denver, “Three the Hard Way” and “#Clamplife” strike up a homegrown exchange between Freight and Clamp Light. Easier to summarize, Freight’s “#Clamplife” (opening March 12 at 1913 S. Flores St.) showcases new works by the seven resident artists under Clamp Light’s umbrella: Sunday Ballew, Carol Cunningham, Colleen O’Brien, Sarah T. Roberts, Jen Frost Smith, Tom Turner and Jose Villalobos. On the flipside, “Three the Hard Way” enlists local artist Raul Gonzalez as curator for three distinct solo shows set to transform Clamp Light throughout March. As the first up to bat, Rafael Fernando Gutierrez Jr. shows us “What It Means” through new drawings, paintings and a performance exploring his experiences as a military veteran, civilian and artist. To sweeten the deal, Gonzalez steps in as DJ and all-purpose “hype man” enhancing all three receptions, which round out with Eric Breish’s “Grim State” (March 11) and Alyssa Danna’s “Love After Love” (March 19). Free, 7-10pm Sat, Clamp Light Artist Studios and Gallery, 1704 Blanco Road, Suite 104, (713) 594-2735, — BR
