"When you come to my kennel, I’ll happily run to the door and greet you with wags and enthusiasm, overflowing with happiness and friendliness. But when staff takes me out to meet you, you’ll hardly recognize the shy, reluctant dog at the end of the leash. I don’t remember what happened before I came here, but I’m just so scared that it takes a long time for me to trust people. I don’t have an ounce of meanness in me – I just need someone with patience to wait for me to be ready to share my love. When that time comes, I enjoy cuddling and I’m as sweet as can be. If you have the time, the rewards are great – I promise!"

That means that the Animal Defense League traveled to the shelter I was in looking for a home before the storm and brought me back to find a home in San Antonio. I’ve got to say I feel like an SA dog and now I just need my forever home to come find me!"

Hi, I’m Disney. I was brought to ADL from Best Friends Animal Society who was working with ADL to transfer Hurricane Harvey pets into the shelter. Now I’m here and ready to find my forever home. If you think you can be that special person for me, then please consider giving me a chance!

"I must have been mistreated at some point in my life, because frankly, I have some behavior issues that I’m getting help resolving. I’m trying very hard because I want a new life in a forever home more than anything. I do what’s called “resource guarding” – I protect things like my food and toys and get angry when someone gets too close when I have them. I’m also uncomfortable being handled unless I’m the one who initiates it. I know good things wait on the other side, and with hard work on my part and patience and love on yours, I can be a wonderful dog again like I was before. Imagine how great it would be to be part of my journey!"

"James is a royal name and being a mastiff means I come from royal blood. I’m very stoic and kingly unless you show me a treat. I love treats so much I unleash my goofy side to get you to give them to me. I’m possessive of my food and will guard it so it’s best I go home with a family with children 12 year and up. So if you’re looking for a king who can get down and be goofy then look no further than me!"

"I don’t know what a tootsie roll is, but everyone says I look just like one. It must be something long and brown and sweet, because that pretty much describes me. I’m a happy girl who loves to go on walks and runs, which are pretty much the same thing for me. I’m very good on the leash, and whether I’m walking or running, the pace is about the same, so you don’t have to worry about my getting ahead of you. Even though I’m 7, I could walk all day if you wanted, but I’m just as happy relaxing next to you. I just want a forever home more than anything."

"Hi, I’m Zippy! I am the happiest dog here! I am so good at being a dog. I walk like a proper lady, play like a puppy, and I’m a social butterfly who gets along with everybody! I came to ADL due to Hurricane Harvey and now I’m ready to find my forever home. I walk great on a leash so please take me on a walk with you! You’ll quickly realize we can be best friends and we must live happily ever after!"

Hi, I’m Charlotte! Come over to the cattery room to hang out with me. It will be very fun and entertaining. I love meeting new people!

"Such a sweet name – I must be a delicate little dog who enjoys sitting daintily on your lap while you sip tea, right? Wrong! I am little, but delicate? Not a chance! They call me “spunky,” which means I can’t sit still for a second. I want to be playing or kissing or rolling in the grass or chasing bugs or finding mischief. That’s what life’s all about! If I came to live with you, I’d bring my sense of joy with me and we would have a grand time together."

"I’m a very active boy and you won’t see me stay still for long. I like playing, and I enjoy dogs and kids over 12. I do have a problem with a disc in my back and that means I shouldn’t play rough or jump from high surfaces. But so far I haven’t had any trouble, and I plan to keep it that way. I would love to go home with you and be spoiled and loved."

"I’m a fun and lovable bouncy meatball! I’m always so wiggly around people because I get excited and crave attention! I’d fit in great with a family with kiddos but as for other dogs, I’d prefer to meet future dog siblings before we decide to make it official. Well, what are you waiting for? "No, I am not a bear, I’m just Lloyd the handsome chow chow mix. I was brought to ADL due to Hurricane Harvey and now I’m ready to find a forever home! My handsome bear-ish looks get me a lot of attention. Most people have the urge to give me a big ol’ hug because I look like a big cuddly bear, but please, take it easy with me! I am deaf and don’t have the best eye sight, so it’s very easy to startle me. I also prefer to not have my neck touched. It’s just not my thing! Since children like to hug, I prefer a home with no children. Overall, I am a friendly old man. I also enjoy slow strolls in the park and I like treats. I’m looking for a calm home where I can relax and be loved. I would probably be okay with a little dog sibling too, one who is as calm as me. Do you think you can be that special person for me? Then come by and visit me!"

"Hi, I’m Sushi! Aren’t I adorable?! I was unfortunately one of the pets displaced by Hurricane Harvey but I was fortunate enough to be taken in by Best Friends Animal Society. They then brought me here to ADL to look for a forever home! I am an FIV positive cat but I’m doing just fine! If you’re not familiar with FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) in cats, I suggest you read about it, and you’ll learn it’s not as scary as it sounds. FIV kitties are just as deserving of love too! I like to play and sometimes tend to play rough. I am a nice guy! I just sometimes have feisty cattitude. That shouldn’t be a big deal, I’m still cute!I like to roll over on my back and be silly. I also love to be lazy too. I’m okay with being picked up but I’ll let you know once I’m done. If you’re okay with some cattitude in your life, then please give me a chance to be your feline friend!"
