With the St. Mary's Strip, a lively downtown and several dive bars throughout the city, it's never a challenge to find a place to find a drink in San Antonio. Finding sober ways to have fun, however, can sometimes be a challenge. Here are 20 of our favorite ways to have a good time in the Alamo City without a drop of alcohol.
OF 20
Arrange a staycation
If you’re wanting a special night out on the town, arrange a “staycation” with your friends. Check out local Airbnb’s, places to camp, or a hotel, like Hotel Havana. Once you’re all checked into your home away from home, pretend to be a tourist and visit all of SA’s famous spots. It can make for a surprisingly good time — even for a certified local.

Visit a farmer’s market
Visit a farmer’s market with your friends and shop around for fresh, local products and produce. The Pearl has a great outdoor market on weekends, and on Tuesdays and Saturdays there’s a super local market near the intersection of McCullough and Vance Jackson. You and your friends will love browsing all of the cool things that these farmer markets have to offer.

Join an at night hiking or biking group
To get fit the fun way, join a local biking or hiking group. SATX Social Ride meets every Tuesday for a fun bike ride through the city. The San Antonio Beginners Hiking Group posts group hikes in its Facebook. These groups will get you outdoors, meeting new people and exercising.

Sip on coffee at local cafes
Go on a coffee binge with a few of your friends. Try your best to sip all of the local cup of joes in the city. There’s nothing better than chatting over a warm (or iced in Texas) cup of coffee.

Get out and get active
Consider attending a free outdoor exercise through the city’s recreation program, or just head to one of the many SA parks with a group of friends. Whether you’re walking or running, you’ll be happy to have spent your time outdoors and being healthy with your friend group.

Host a game night complete with trivia and board games
Host a night to remember and have all of your friends bring over their favorite board game. Head to a place with board games like Candlelight Coffeehouse or keep things even more low key at your house. Your group will love all of the inevitable throwback games that bring them back to their childhood. Throw in a quick game of trivia for an activity that’s sure to get everyone involved and having fun. A simple, easy idea — but a game night is always a crowd pleaser.

Get crafty with DIY projects
Have your friends over and work on fun DIY projects. Once you guys feel comfortable in your artistic skills, try shaking things up by joining an art class like Sunin Clay Studio or visiting a sit-in painting store like Clay Casa.

Eat your way through tasty SA restaurants
Try making it a monthly ritual to go an international restaurant that you’ve never tried before. Right now we can’t stop eating Simi’s Indian Cuisine. It’s a great activity to do with friends. Everyone can choose a different restaurant to show off during their month. It gets you out on the town and seeing sights, tasting eateries and visiting places you’ve never tried or been to before.

Play games at an arcade
Unleash your inner child and play pinball and other old-timey games at a local arcade. Dave & Buster’s is always a convenient spot, but if you’re looking for something more affordable and local, try the Diversions Game Room on San Pedro.

Participate in a community garden
Make a weekly hangout out of caring for your veggies and plants at a community garden with your friends. You’ll love gardening. It’s a relaxing and worthwhile way to spend your time. It’s also a great way to have fresh vegetables and ingredients.

Check out a movie night
Everyone loves a movie night. Either have everyone over to your place (and make sure it’s stocked with popcorn and snacks) with their favorite flick in tow, or head to one of Slab Cinema’s free movie showings at public parks. Either way, movie nights are always a crowd pleaser.

Grill at an outdoor park
Who doesn’t love grilling food at a park? It’s a great option for a casual weeknight or Friday night out. Have your friends bring different veggies and foods, and have a tasty grilled meal at a beautiful SA park. We recommend going in the evening close to sunset so that it’s not too hot outdoors.

Snack on treats from local bakeries
You deserve to snack on conchas, empanadas, ice cream and cookies to your heart’s content. Luckily San Antonio is a great place to be if you have a sweet tooth. You can find everything you want and more at panaderias like La Familia Bakery, ice cream shops like Lick and bakeries like Bakery Lorraine.

Head to a local comedy club, like Laugh Out Loud Comedy Club, and attend an open- mic night or a comedy show. Laughing so hard that you cry is always a great way to spend the evening.

Catch a live music concert:
Either catch a band you know you love, or go to a show that you know nothing about. The live music scene is always a good time in San Antonio. We recommend visiting Paper Tiger and Aztec Theatre for countless nights of great music and fun times.

Visit a local art gallery
From cultural exhibits to awesome local art, you’ll love visiting one of the many 210 galleries. Local art galleries, like the Presa House Gallery, have rotating exhibits, so make sure to keep up to date with what they’re showing right now. If you’re a college student, check ahead for student discount before heading to a local art gallery or museum, like the San Antonio Museum of Art.

Go to an amusement park
Visiting an amusement park is not just for kids. Riding all of Fiesta Texas’ roller coasters can be a surprisingly fun activity for an adult friend group. We advise going in the evening when it’s not too hot to get in the way of enjoying your trip.

Catch a sunset at one of SA’s parks
Pack a picnic and a blanket and head to one of SA’s countless parks. Make sure to go right before sunset so that you’ll have time to set up shop before the sun goes down. You’ll love checking out the beautiful scenery.

Go swimming with friends
Jump in your swimsuit and head over to the San Pedro Springs, nearby natural water area, like Canyon Lake, or even one of your friend’s pools. Swimming is a favorite pastime for San Antonians, especially if you’re needing to beat the sweltering 100-plus degree heat.

Host or join a dinner potluck group
Summer nights are best spent with your friends outdoors and with amazing foods. Check out local SA potluck groups, like the San Antonio Vegetable Eaters. Have each friend bring their specialty eats for a potluck dinner under the stars. If you don’t have an ideal outdoor patio for the potluck, try hosting it at a park, picnic style.
