20th Annual Mays Symposium Celebrates the Decorative Arts, Craft, and Design: Collecting the Past—Crafting the Future

When: Sat., Feb. 4, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. 2017
Price: $25-$75
From earliest times, humans have created and collected objects – both utilitarian and decorative - to facilitate and enhance the experience of living. As collectors, historians, artists and students of life we wonder what those object tell us about their meaning today and at the time of execution. Can we determine when or why an object was made and for whom? What does a chair or an exquisitely wrought silver candlestick or a simple pottery bowl reveal about its cultural context and how has its value changed over the years? What is that object’s significance in an art-historical narrative and what relevance might it have for a collector or an artist today? Join SAMA's distinguished speakers as we look to the past and celebrate the future of decorative arts from ancient times into the 21st Century.
