Congressmen Will Hurd, Lamar Smith and Henry Cuellar want to have the signing ceremony for NAFTA 2.0 – formally know as the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) – in San Antonio.
The three lawmakers, each of whom represents a slice of San Antonio, made the request in a letter to President Donald Trump, Mexican President Enrique Pena-Nieto and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
The Alamo City hosted the original NAFTA signing 25 years ago.
"My hope is that the City of San Antonio will continue tradition by hosting the signing of the new pact, just as it did in 1993," Cuellar (D-Laredo) said in a prepared statement. "I look forward to reviewing the USMCA in Congress and, ultimately, the economic growth and stronger cross-border relationships the agreement will bring."
A couple of observations:
1. San Antonio's other two Congress members, Joaquin Castro and Lloyd Doggett, both Democrats, didn't sign the letter. Hurd and Smith are Republicans, and Cuellar is a moderate, business-friendly Democrat.
2. The effort to bring the signing ceremony here could suffer from the fact that there's no Trump hotel in San Antonio to put up, and profit from, all the foreign dignitaries who would attend.
