The first-ever CAM Dance will be held at Brick, directly following the CAM kick-off party at Blue Star. You may be thinking, “Cool, but what does a dance have to do with contemporary art?” Well, curators Chris Sauter and Mark Menjivar have managed to transform the dance itself into a happening, à la 1960s performance art. Through their dancing, guests will become (hopefully) willing participants in the projector-driven installation, but you have to attend the dance to find out just how you will be participating. There will be a cash bar at the event. Bonnie Cisneros and Agosto Cuellar will be DJing through midnight. Free (donations at the door), 9pm Thursday, Brick, 108 Blue Star,

Friday, March 6

Artpace is celebrating the first weekend of CAM with tacos. El Tacomiendo, Artpace’s very own taco truck-in-residence, will sidle up alongside the building’s courtyard and will be slinging tasty tacos, tortas, and tostados to hungry art lovers through the afternoon. You can grab some food then check out Artpaces exhibits, or vice versa. The bottom line is: what better way to experience art than with tacos? El Tacomiendo accepts cash only, so show up ready to throw some down. 11:30am-2pm Friday, Artpace, 445 N Main Ave., 212-4900,

R Gallery and Southtown 101 have put their own spin on SXSW. Beginning on March 19, a four-day series of outdoor concerts will be held in Southtown 101’s parking lot. Before this music fest begins, however, R Gallery is presenting three new exhibitions – Ruben Luna’s Me Lleva la Corriente, Daniel Guerrero’s Proximal Views of Distal Experiences, and Ingrid Meija’s ¡Wachale! – to get you pumped for CAM. The work displayed during SXST will range from personal, biographical pieces to explorations of Chicano culture to universal works meant to spark nostalgia in all viewers. The exhibition’s opening ceremony will be held on March 6, from 6-11 p.m. and will remain open through the SXST concert series. Free, 6pm Friday, The R Gallery, 725 South Presa.

Friday, March 6 – Sunday, March 8
Mandala Healing Arts Women’s Day Celebration

  • Keller-Rihn Studio

The Mandala Healing Arts Project is a group that meets every Saturday at Keller-Rihn Studio. The project’s members come together in a relaxed, inclusive environment to create art for the purpose of individual and community healing. On Friday, March 6, the Mandala Healing Art’s artwork will be on display at the studio. Viewers can expect to see the group’s namesake mandalas, but also weavings, drawings, paintings, and sculptures. The exhibition will continue through Women’s Day and will culminate in a floating installation on the San Antonio River. Mandalas will float along the river, suspended in inner tubes and illuminated in an ethereal display. There will be several guest speakers and performers during the event, including Bharatanatyam dancers and drummers of American Indians in Texas. Free, times vary, Keller-Rihn Studio, 1420 S. Alamo, 287-8706,
