46 Photos of Día de los Muertos Altars in La Villita

A fan favorite from the get-go, La Villita’s epic Día de los Muertos Celebration combines a high-stakes altar competition (first place wins $2,000), creative workshops, an art market with 30-plus vendors, a puppet procession presented by Las Monas drum and dance troupe and an eclectic live music lineup. In addition to thoughtful — and even music-enhanced — celebrations of late icons (Selena, Juan Gabriel, David Bowie, Gene Wilder and Princess Diana among them), this year’s colorful array of ofrendas features highly personal offerings to dearly departed loved ones and a tear-jerking tribute to the victims of the Pulse nightclub shootings in Orlando.
