5 Things You Need to Know About Scotch

Scotch whisky: two words that delight some and drive fear into the hearts of many. As a newbie to the drinking scene, I fall into the latter category. This golden liquid baffles me to no end and, when out at bars, I often find myself asking a series of Roseanne Roseannadanna-type questions: Is there a particular brand I should order? What if I order a bad brand and hate it and that forever taints my perception of scotch and I never give it another chance and I miss out on something I might enjoy?

Well fellow Scotch-newcomers, fear no more. In honor of National Scotch Day I’ve assembled list of need-to-know information about Scotch whisky with help from the Jolly Rodriguez and Eric Ybarbo at Saglimbeni Fine Wines...

1. All Scotch whisky is distilled and matured in Scotland. If it's not from Scotland, it's not Scotch!

2. Scotch whisky must be aged a minimum of  not one, not two, but three years in order for it to qualify as Scotch whisky. Some brands are matured up to 40 years and can cost upwards of $1,000 (yikes).

3. Scotch whisky names come from the region they're created in (Lowland, Highland, Islay, Speyside, and others) and certain characteristics are often associated with each particular place.

4. There are two main classifications of Scotch: Blended and Single Malt. Blended Scotch whisky is comprised of single malts and grain whiskies that have been blended (hence the name) together. Single Malt Scotch whisky is created from 100 percent malted barley.

5. The guys at Saglimbeni's recommend a Blended Scotch whisky for first-timers, as it has a more subtle, mellow feel to it. Some brands to keep in mind are Chivas Regal, The Famous Grouse, and Johnny Walker. If you're feeling bold and want to dive right into the strong stuff, Jolly and Eric stated that Macallan is their most popular brand of Single Malt whisky.
