The young boy was shot fives times during the November 5, 2017 shooting and survived due to his stepmother Joann Ward shielding him and his siblings. Joann and two of Ryland's sisters, 5-year-old Brooke Ward and 7-year-old Emily Garza, were among the 26 victims.

Ryland has been in the hospital since the shooting and is expected to be released Thursday afternoon. Rusty Duncan, the firefighter that rescued Ryland, said he'll escort the young boy home in a fire truck, just like Ryland has wanted. He invited others to be part of the escort as well.
