Her later paintings progressed to a more dimensional painterly style. Johnson’s narrative art takes a snapshot of people interacting in social situations. The inspiration for her vivid paintings comes from poems, songs, novels, media, as well as the works of Romare Bearden and Diego Rivera. 2102077211

The blues is music for all time—past, present, and future—and few artists simultaneously exemplify those multiple temporal moments of the genre like North Mississippi’s Cedric Burnside. The Grammy-winning, Mississippi Hill Country blues guitarist and singer/songwriter was born in the blues as much as he was in funk, rock, soul, and hip-hop. These latter sensibilities are reflected across his work, as he drives Hill Country blues into grooves that lend themselves readily to an urgent, modern moment. Burnside contains within him the legacy and future of the region’s prescient sound stories. 2102072234

In traditional ekphrastic poetry, a work of art is closely studied by the writer. The writer then considers the work carefully, absorbing any sense of mood, emotion, or intellectual vibe they may perceive, ultimately expressing those feelings in poetic terms. Cody Vance intends to create a visual ekphrastic exercise by taking a step back from his own sculptural work and observing pieces he’s spent dozens of hours working on, then paint in response to whatever comes forward. 2102077211
