Empanada aficionados can breathe a sigh of relief: Beto's is back. Torta fanciers, on the other hand, are pissed. On the streamlined menu that accompanied Beto's move to scaled-down quarters up Broadway a piece from the previous location, the south-of-the-border subs are absent, and their vocal partisans have made management amply aware of their displeasure. Lay off, guys: Tortas, we're told, will be back. But nobody seems to be complaining about the missing platos. Roasted chicken, grilled whole fish, Beto's Mixed Grill are also AWOL, victims of the pared-down (but definitely not down-and-out) mindset that characterizes the new location. There is a new enthusiasm: Symbolic of tenant-landlord discord, an office building is said to soon be going up in Beto's old backyard. The current backyard, reclaimed from a parking lot and casually landscaped, is utterly anti-office in its laid-back demeanor. This is the place to chill, even in the heat. The Blackeyed Pea features everything from pot roast to salmon, including meatloaf, chicken fried steak, and spicy or fried catfish. From 4-7pm everyday the restaurant offers $0.99 domestic longnecks and margaritas for $1.50 a piece.

The best coffeehouse is Candlelight Coffeehouse, which stands out not only for its divine java, but also for its couches, cats, and wine. Its only drawback is that it doesn't open until 4 p.m., which in coffee terms, is about the time to drink decaf unless it's the weekend. On the other hand, it's the perfect time for wine.
Bribe or apologize your way to forgiveness with a box of luscious cocoa gems from this Stone Oak confectioner. Adventurous flavors like mango & habanero and Earl Grey are subtly delivered and elegantly decorated by St. Philip's College (and Chicago Chocolate Academy) grad Jamie Choi. the salted caramels in dark chocolate are sublime. -- Elaine Wolff (05/10)
