Initially funded with the Bryne grant through the San Antonio Housing Authority (SAHA), Gardopia implemented Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) as a methodology for crime reduction. Working with SAHA, Gardopia became the Eastside's first Garden Utopia, where members of the community began growing their own food on an abandon lot.
