Justly famous for its fish tacos, the Cove is also a good location for locavores and vegetarians thanks to owner Lisa Asvestas’s commitment to sustainable food sources (she can tell you where to find raw milk, too). Beer and wine tastings, plus live music and the adjacent laundromat make it a one-stop lifestyle shop without the Austin attitude.
Unlike many Mexican restaurants whose menu mainstays include Aztec-inspired staples from Central Mexico like enchiladas and tamales, El Papalote focuses on the grilled cuisine that originated in Northern Mexico and gained popularity among Mexican and Tejano ranching communities throughout history. Chicken enchiladas, mole and carne guisada are nowhere to be found at El Papalote. Rather, grilled meats flavored with dry seasonings, fresh vegetables and imported Mexican cheeses define its cuisine.;;Tacos are the most popular menu option at El Papalote, whose top-selling item in San Antonio thus far is the Establo beef tacos. Seasoned rib-eye is grilled and accompanied by onion and cilantro in freshly made corn tortillas for a delicious example of border comfort food. Other popular items include the Monterrey beef tacos, fajita meat seasoned adobada (spicy) or natural with imported Mexican cheese and guacamole in flour tortillas, and the Papalote shrimp tacos, which are accompanied by onion, bacon, green peppers and mushrooms in flour tortillas. Although each taco selection includes a specified tortilla, guests are welcome to choose flour, corn or a combination.;;In addition to its vast array of tacos, El Papalote also specializes in beef and chicken fajitas.;;With a full bar, happy hour is all day Sunday and Monday, as well as from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Currently, $2.00 drafts are offered during Happy Hour, and the selection includes Guinness, Blue Moon, Tecate Light, Shiner Bock, Dos XX and Miller Light ;

The risque entertainment is the draw at this taco joint -- and it's already drawn neighborhood protests. -- Nicole Chavez, 02/08
"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." (Hebrews 11:1) Not to worry: If ever there were someone not qualified to opine on matters biblical, 'twould be I. But the preceding verse is burned into my mind by virtue of its posting on the wall of the group cycling room at the Downtown YMCA - where another kind of burning also goes on - that of the calories implied by this article and all others past and future. It's also especially appropriate to the Leap of Faith Café, located in the basement of Travis Park United Methodist Church. Connie Marshall, the café's congenial owner/hostess/guiding light, abandoned her two popular Seasons Café and Bakery locations for a subterranean site, which, in spite of exposed limestone walls, track lighting, and displays of art (affecting portraits of homeless people comprise the current show), still seems very much the church basement it is - with long, communal tables covered with oilcloth. There is more at work here than marketing, and a certain amount of faith is required of the first-time diner; a sandwich board at the street level is the only overt indication of the café's location. It's the only evidence of things not (yet) seen. - Ron Bechtol

The house salsa is rogue at the new Mary Lou's, but the Tex-Mex staples are well above average, and now you can enjoy them on marble floors, for what that's worth. Ask for the salsa verde, and try the enchiladas verdes, too. -- Ron Bechtol (06/09)
Mom and pop restaurant with delicious homestyle mexican cooking, fresh homemade flour tortillas made to order, simply the best hole in the wall restaurant that needs the recognition it deserves.
