Hearty Greek favorites in a quaint faux-taverna adorned with murals of the Mediterranean.
Demo's restaurant is located right across from a local Greek Orthodox church and is one of two restaurants. St. Mary's Demo's features belly dancers on Wednesday nights, and delicious Greek food every night.
This is our best kept secret, Demo’s Stone Oak location in The Vineyard Shopping Center at the corner of Loop 1604 and Blanco Rd. At Demo’s we offer our guests a unique dining experience, similar to a quaint village on a Greek Island complete with Greek Music, good food and fun.
Not far into the introduction of one of my Greek cookbooks, the following assertion appears: "The truth is that the Greeks taught everyone else how to cook and eat." After which the students outstripped the teacher, I couldn't help thinking - a conclusion the authors almost reluctantly come to a few paragraphs later when they admit that, " ... modern Greek food may lack a certain polish when compared to some of its sister cuisines in the Mediterranean basin." But they follow up by noting, "It may well be that the very simple character of Greek home cooking is what makes it so appealing." If we can add restaurant cooking to the pot, John the Greek fits the;model to a tau. The atmosphere is travel-poster plain; the service is smart but familiar and the food, well, the best of it is homey and utterly unpretentious, except for the all-Greek wine list.;- Ron Bechtol
Paletta's is closed, and sorely missed.;;We are a Greek, Italian and Lebanese Grocery Store and Deli/This year we are celebrating our 90th Anniversary in San Antonio. We have remodeled and our place is beautiful - we are now opened Monday - Saturday from 9am - 6pm / We have expanded our menu and now serve hot sandwiches like The Muffuletta and The Cheesy Jo with Ham. Of course we still have our famous Mamma Mia Sandwich and spicy olives.Paletta's is great fun! When you come in for lunch we have an old time juke box that plays old tunes and you can shop for imported hard to find items, or have lunch from our deli or get all your meats and cheeses and italian sausage and other deli items by the pound. We also have something we call "Paletta's After Hours" this is when we have private parties like the 4 course Italian Dinner we are doing on Valentines Day. Paletta's has uniqie items like Valerio's salad dressing from the old Valerio's restaurant, Spumoni ice cream, fresh italian sausage, fresh grated parmesan, and all kinds of other hard to find products.
With three San Antonio locations, Papouli's is a Pan-Mediterranean concept that maintains its core identity as a Greek restaurant, while offering an array of non-Greek menu items. From flavors to feels, sights to sounds, aromas to aesthetics, the unique offerings of Papouli's centers on enhanced recipe flavors, “wow” portion sizes and a uniquely picturesque setting. Come as you are and enjoy a light meal or a hearty Greek Feast. Either way, you'll be pleased, especially with no tipping in our friendly counter-service format.
With 100 years in the business, the Anthony family serves up traditional fare, and although there's no table service you can expect great hospitality. The souvlakis are especially good, and the egg-custard-based galaktobouriko with honey and cinnamon soars.
The grains and legumes are ground fresh at Zorbas, and it shows in the succulent, fragrant traditional dishes. The baba ganouj is outstanding. -- Mark Jones (04/09)
