Downtown happy-hour central, come one, come all. Great conversation hideout, with friendly bartenders and stiff shots. -- SgtCody (10/08)
Well, OK. It's a strip club. But it does have a damn tasty buffet.
Just a laid-back, friendly, South Texas ice house in the King William neighborhood. -- Lyle Rosdahl (10/08)
Sophisticated contemporary setting overlooking a quieter corner of the River Walk, just off the ostentatious Grand Hyatt lobby. -- Mark Jones (02/09)
Empanada aficionados can breathe a sigh of relief: Beto's is back. Torta fanciers, on the other hand, are pissed. On the streamlined menu that accompanied Beto's move to scaled-down quarters up Broadway a piece from the previous location, the south-of-the-border subs are absent, and their vocal partisans have made management amply aware of their displeasure. Lay off, guys: Tortas, we're told, will be back. But nobody seems to be complaining about the missing platos. Roasted chicken, grilled whole fish, Beto's Mixed Grill are also AWOL, victims of the pared-down (but definitely not down-and-out) mindset that characterizes the new location. There is a new enthusiasm: Symbolic of tenant-landlord discord, an office building is said to soon be going up in Beto's old backyard. The current backyard, reclaimed from a parking lot and casually landscaped, is utterly anti-office in its laid-back demeanor. This is the place to chill, even in the heat. A mojito won't hurt at other times, despite, or perhaps because of, its reduced rum content.;- Ron Bechtol
Great hamburger joint. Enjoy.
An elegant, old-school steakhouse that offers adventure in the form of wild game and a hot new downstairs bar.
Delicious food in an elegant setting.
All right, so it isn't the most glamorous place to chow down. But inside the retro-fa├žade, the men inside Burger Boy churn out the damn tastiest burgers in San Antonio. They aren't particularly thick, or enormously big, but there is a world of flavor in each mouthful: a potent beefiness that the likes of McDonald's have made us all forget. Complementing the old-fashioned burger are french fries that look like they came out of your childhood cafeteria, but these Ore-Ida knockoffs are crunchy, salty, and guiltily addictive. - Laura Fries
