Head to the Bijou for Screening of Cuban Classic Memories of Underdevelopment

At once sharp and dreamlike, Tomás Gutiérrez Alea’s Cuban feature Memories of Underdevelopment is one of the great films of the 1960s, and that’s saying something.

Sergio (Sergio Corrieri), a well-to-do young man, has elected to remain in Cuba while most members of his family and class have fled to Florida. As he drifts through the plotless, impressionistic narrative, he feels lost and alienated from both his own roots and the new society. This could be seen as an unofficial sequel to Bernardo Bertolucci’s 1964 masterpiece Before the Revolution. Now it’s after the revolution, and nothing has changed for the uncommitted, unconvinced bit of bourgeois flotsam at its center. His fate may be ennui and irrelevance, but the movie’s technical bravura and sheer black-and-white beauty make it a dazzling predicament. Texas Public Radio revives the 1968 classic as part of its Cinema Tuesdays series.
