When any band has the audacity to seemingly toss adjectives together to describe themselves in an effort to be ironic or aloof, it makes me want to not write about them. That was my first impression of Denver’s self-described “surf jazz” outfit Whole Milk. Then I discovered that surf jazz was an actual genre, and I gave Whole Milk a shot.

Boy, am I glad I did.

Combining elements of chillwave with indie pop and bass-forward grooves that carry the faintest whisper of dub, Whole Milk’s sound is refreshing and carefree. They don’t sound like they’re trying to be anything, and that’s one of the best parts about what they do. With Opaque Ghost, MysterE, and Something4nothing as the local support, this show looks tight.

$5, Mon Jan. 7, 9pm, Reggae Bar, 826 San Pedro, (210) 772-9891.
