Less than a week after 7-year-old Jazmine Barnes was killed in a drive-by shooting in Houston, police arrested two men in connection with the crime.
On Saturday night, the Harris County Sheriff's Office announced the arrest of Eric Black Jr., who admitted to taking part in the shooting. The 20-year-old man has been charged with capital murder for his role as the driver, though investigators believe Larry Woodruffe is the shooter. Woodruffe has been arrested on an unrelated drug charge.
The arrests come after the Dec. 30 shooting of Barnes made national headlines, causing outrage from activists including Shaun King and an outpouring of support online and via GoFundMe. Barnes was riding in a car with her mother and three sisters when a man drove up beside them at a red light and opened fire. Barnes, who was sitting behind the driver's seat, was struck in the head.
She died at the scene.
Investigators believe the man fired on the car by mistake, saying the family was not the intended target.
"Our work is not finished, but I believe the people of Harris County can take comfort in knowing we have made progress," Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said.
Barnes will be buried on Tuesday. NBA great Shaquille O'Neal, along with Houston police officer Kenneth Miles, will cover the funeral costs.
