It would have been easy enough for slowlikefire to emerge from the ruins of Ledaswan with the same sound, the same approach and the same concept, but instead they’ve tapped into their significant gift for songcraft and unleashed their ’90s indie side with Thieves By Nature. The result is pure enjoyment—fantastic edgy guitar echoes from the Monzon brothers (Jaime, the Current’s Web Editor, and David) and Nicholas Ochoa’s excellent, off-kilter drumming on tracks like “The Sex,” the catchy “Take This As Goodbye” and the killer “My Name Is Billy Jean Davy” that recall the likes of Polvo, Versus and Unrest while still remaining very original. Could be the debut of the year. See them live (11 p.m.) at the CD release party Saturday at Jack’s Bar ($5-$7, 3030 Thousand Oaks) with Donella Drive, Black Market Club and Squid Row.
