San Antonio nonprofits present nontraditional holiday entertainment

Want a break from traditional holiday entertainment? Enjoy some of these upcoming shows presented by local nonprofits.

A Very Latin Christmas Henry Brun and the Latin Playerz featuring Judi Deleon, Vocalist Presented by: Arts San Antonio Friday, December 2, 7:30 p.m. Charline McCombs Empire Theatre Latin Playerz is described as "an ensemble that incorporates a variety of Latin styles with Rhythm and Blues, Swing and Jazz." I've not seen this group in person, but I recommend it because all proceeds from this show benefit ARtsTEach, which is ARTS San Antonio's in-classroom, elementary school arts education program benefiting children in mostly economically disadvantaged neighborhoods. El Corrido de Chuy Presented by: KRTU Jazz 91.7 and SAY Sí Saturday, December 10, 7:30 pm SAY Sí Central What I like about the KRTU's "Year of Jazz" is the collaborative effort of 20 different arts and music nonprofits to present enjoyable events all around the theme of jazz. For Say Sí's theater students, it makes for an exciting addition to their annual holiday play. Artistic/Executive Director Jon Hinojosa explains, "We are excited to be partnering with KRTU and their "Year of Jazz" on El Corrido de Chuy. Our theatre students have performed the play for the last two years and being able to include live performances this year will add a new dimension for them and the audience. Having professional musicians playing Jazz and traditional Mariachi before, during and after the performances will be something you do not want to miss!"

Golden Fingers and Golden Toes Presented by: Musical Bridges Around the World Sunday, December 11, 3:00 pm McAllister Auditorium How can you beat this for diversity? Six international pianists will present a unique, exciting program culminating in a "one-of-a-kind interpretation" of Listz's "Hexameron." The "Golden Toes" part refers to four classical ballet dancers from New York dancing the world premier of the new jazz ballet "Fables" created by the internationally renowned Elena Kunikova. I don't hesitate one minute to call this a must attend. Whatever you do, however you celebrate your holidays, check out the local scene for good musical fare. --- For more from Laura Carter follow @lauracarter or visit A Small Blog Photos courtesy of Jon Hinojosa at Say Sí and Anya Grokhovski, Artistic Director/General Manager at Musical Bridges Around the World.
