Group claims Macy's fired Rivercenter employee over LGBT-friendly policy

Macy's has drawn the anger of a Florida-based conservative Christian group claiming the chain's Rivercenter store fired an employee who refused to let a transgender shopper to use its women's fitting room.

The Florida-based Liberty Counsel, a which represents people claiming they were fired for religious beliefs, is crying religious discrimination, saying Macy's fired former Rivercenter store employee Natalie Johnson for refusing to adhere to the company's LGBT-friendly policies.

According to the group, Johnson saw a transgender woman come out of the women's fitting room and promptly told her she had to stay out. “The cross-dressing young man claimed that he is a 'female'. Johnson said that he was wearing make-up and girl's clothing, but clearly he was a male,” the group said in a statement.

When the trans woman, and some of her friends, argued that Macy's has LGBT-friendly policies that let transgender individuals use whatever dressing room they want, Johnson took it up with her boss, who again pointed her to Macy's policy. Johnson insisted it was against her religious beliefs to "lie that he was a woman or compromise with homosexuality," the Liberty Counsel said.

Matthew Staver, the group's founder and chairman, had this to say: “Macy’s policy which allows men to use the women’s dressing room is fraught with problems. This policy will cause significant problems and will alienate the majority of Macy’s customers. Macy’s has essentially opened women’s dressing rooms to every man. The LGBT agenda has become the theater of the absurd.”

This is the same group that has insisted companies embracing LGBT rights are “embracing a radical agenda and are seriously out of touch with mainstream American values.” Among other views on the LGBT front, the Liberty Counsel is against adding language meant to protect LGBT victims in hate-crimes legislation.
