It’s said we burn more calories sleeping than we do watching television, making movie night (popcorn and candy, anyone?) fantastically fatty. That will all change when Main Plaza Conservancy hosts Texas’ first SATX Pedal Power Cycle-In Cinema tonight, beginning at 5 p.m.
Every Thursday from now until Aug. 29, Main Plaza will be screening movies for all to enjoy, using nothing but muscle grease and ingenuity. Everyone is invited to bike to the plaza with their blankets and lawn chairs (baskets and backpacks are the safest way to carry those!) where the film will be powered by a bicycle hooked up to a generator.
Viewers may sign up for a turn on the generator bike and earn their beer and snack calories, or just sit back, relax and enjoy the movie while some sucker huffs and puffs to power the show (but man those quads and calves!).
Pre-show entertainment will include a DJ and ice-cold refreshments from the Blue Star Ice House on sale (leave your own alcohol at home!). The show begins right at dusk–tonight’s is “Pee Wee’s Big Adventure.”
Pee Wee, who is all the fun and ridiculousness of a child expanded into the size of a man, goes on an adventure to the basement of the Alamo to rescue his beloved bicycle. Unbeknownst to poor Pee Wee, the Alamo is basement-less! Bring your own beloved bicycle (or rent a bike from B-Cycle. It’s okay, they’re “open relationship” kind of gals) and enjoy Pee Wee’s shenanigans on the big screen!
If you’re biking home, remember to be safe and turn on your bike lights! The lazies in cars don’t have night vision. If you’ve had a few, don’t drink and pedal, call a cab.
