Song of the Week: Blood Orange's "Chamakay"

We here at the Current think you should take a break from whatever you’re doing and check out the wonderful new track “Chamakay” by Blood Orange. Trust us, you’ll thank us later for turning you on to this laid-back, soulful gem.

Blood Orange is the musical child of Devonté Hynes who previously worked under the band name Lightspeed Champion and was a member of Test Icicles. Devonté, who has worked with Basement Jaxx, Florence & The Machine, Solange Knowles and up-and-comer Sky Ferreira, is set to release Cupid Deluxe, Blood Orange's follow up to 2011’s Coastal Grooves,  later this year and we can’t wait!

Regarding the video for “Chamakay” Devonté said, ”I decided to visit Georgetown, Guyana for the first time, the town where my mother is from. She, herself has not been back for 30 years, 3 years before I was born. I tracked down family members, including my 92-year-old grandfather, who I had never met before. In this video you will see our first ever meeting.”

Devonté has also been busy providing the score for Gia Coppola’s (granddaughter to Francis Ford Coppola) Palo Alto based on the book of short stories by and starring James Franco.
